Best Packaging for Doner Kebab: Wraps, Boxes and Portions

How to choose packaging for doner wraps, kebab boxes and meat-and-chips portions: what to look for with heat, sauce and grease, and which packaging suits each type of order.

Wraps served in printed takeaway packaging

Doner kebab is one of the hardest foods to package well. It's hot, it's juicy, it comes with sauce, and it often travels. The right packaging keeps it together and makes every order look like it came from you. The wrong packaging means soggy bread, leaking sauce and a complaint on a delivery app.

This guide covers what doner needs from its packaging and which option suits each kind of order.

What doner demands from packaging

Whatever you serve, four things matter:

  • Heat. Food that's piping hot at the counter needs to stay warm without turning to steam inside a sealed container.
  • Grease and juices. Meat juices and oil soak through thin paper quickly. Packaging that isn't grease resistant goes soft and shows marks.
  • Sauce. Chilli, garlic and mint sauces escape from anything that isn't a good fit, so the pack has to hold its shape.
  • Handling. Your team fills these during a rush, and customers eat them on the move. A pack that's quick to fill and easy to hold wins.

Packaging for a doner wrap or kebab roll

A wrapped doner needs two layers of protection: something that holds the wrap together, and something that carries it.

  • Food wrapping paper goes around the wrap itself. It keeps the filling in and keeps hands clean while it's eaten. Printed food wrapping paper also gives you a branded first layer.
  • Wrap boxes slip over the wrapped kebab and keep it upright and intact. A pillow-style wrap box holds a roll snugly, and an enclosed box protects it on collection and delivery.
  • Greaseproof paper can sit inside the pack as an extra barrier when the filling is particularly juicy. See printed greaseproof paper.

Packaging for doner in a box or on chips

Meat and chips, doner on rice or a mixed plate is a different job. It's heavier, usually has salad and sauce, and needs a sturdy base.

  • Takeaway food boxes work for these portions. Choose a box with enough room that the lid closes without pressing on the food. Custom takeaway food boxes are made to the size of your portions.
  • Strength matters. A saucy, heavy portion needs a firmer board than a light one, and a lid that stays shut in a delivery bag.
  • Keep sides apart if you can. A box with compartments, such as a meal deal box, stops salad and sauce from soaking the meat and chips.

Packaging for delivery orders

Delivery adds a journey, and food sits in a bag for longer than it does at the counter.

  • Pack each item in its own box or wrapper, then place everything in a delivery bag that carries your typical order safely.
  • A sticker across the bag opening shows the order hasn't been opened. Seal stickers double as a place for your logo.
  • Test your packaging with a real order before you commit. Fill a box, send it on a typical delivery and see what arrives.

How to choose

Ask yourself:

  1. What goes in? A wrap, a boxed portion or both?
  2. How does it leave your kitchen? Eaten on the spot, collected, or delivered?
  3. How saucy is it? The wetter the food, the stronger and more grease resistant the packaging needs to be.
  4. Do you want it to look like your brand? Printed packaging puts your name in front of every customer. Kraft gives a natural look, white board shows bold colours well.
  5. How many do you use? Ordering in bulk brings the price per pack down, and storing it for you can help if space is tight.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the cheapest option without testing it. A box that fails on delivery costs more than the saving.
  • Using one size for everything. A wrap and a meat-and-chips portion need different packs.
  • Ignoring sauce. Check how your sauces behave in the pack, not just the meat.
  • Designing without seeing it folded. Ask for a sample before you approve a full run.
