How to Choose Takeaway Food Boxes: Size, Board and Lids

A takeaway box has to fit the portion, handle heat and grease and stay shut in a bag. How to choose the right size, board strength and lid for your takeaway.

The box is the part of your takeaway packaging that customers actually open. If it is too small the food overflows, if it is too big the portion looks mean, and if it is weak it goes soft before the food gets to the door. Here is how to choose.

Size: fit the portion

Measure your standard portion and your largest. A box that fits your regular portion snugly looks generous and holds the food in place. If you sell small, regular and large portions, you may need two or three sizes.

Board strength

Hot, heavy or oily food needs a stronger board. A lighter board suits dry food and short journeys. Think about the heaviest dish you serve and test with that.

Grease resistance

Oil that passes through the board makes the food look worse and marks the bag. Choose a board with enough grease resistance for your menu.

Lids and closure

A lid should stay shut in a delivery bag. Hinged lids and tuck closures suit different foods. Choose one that closes securely but is easy to open.

Finish the order

A printed sticker seals the bag, and a strong takeaway bag carries the whole order.
